Liberty Media's Chase Carey says F1 is still too complicated for many fans

F1 boss Chase Carey and the 10 Formula 1 teams are working to final a new set of guidelines for the sport.

Formula 1 chief executive Chase Carey, saying that fans “really can’t follow” the sport’s complex rules, would like to trim a few pages from the rulebook.

All 10 teams have agreed in principle with the new technical and sporting rules for 2021, but the teams are still negotiating new commercial agreements with Liberty Media and the FIA.

“We have got too many complicated penalties and rules,” Carey said, according to an article in the London Independent. “We have got a 100-page regulation book. We have got to get the business to a place where it is easier to follow and has fewer complexities that fans out there really can’t follow.”

But Carey, who runs the sport on behalf of its owner Liberty Media, acknowledged that the intrinsic nature of F1 means it will always be complex.

“It will always be a complicated sport that is a marriage of sporting competition and technology,” Carey said. But we need to make it something that is more in line with what the fans want to see and what excites and energizes them.”
