Macau GP: Mick Schumacher tops first practice

European Formula 3 champion Mick Schumacher led the way in Thursday’s opening free practice session for the Macau Grand Prix.

The German steadily built up his pace throughout the 40-minute session before putting in his best lap with just two minutes of practice remaining.

British driver Callum Ilott, who is returning to F3 this weekend with the Carlin team, was another driver who saved his best until the end as he delivered the second fastest time – just 0.030 seconds behind Schumacher – on his final lap of the session.

Motopark’s Juri Vips ended up third quickest, having had a scare early in the session when he brushed a wall with his left rear tyre. The impact caused a puncture and forced a quick trip to the pits for a fresh set of tyres.

Reigning Macau champion Dan Ticktum was another driver who produced his best lap right at the end of the session, as he ended up fourth quickest ahead of his Motopark teammate Joel Eriksson and Carlin’s Sacha Fenestraz.

The session passed without major incident, although Japan’s Dragon faced a post-session investigation for  having crossed the yellow pitlane exit line.
