Max Verstappen brought his Red Bull home third in Sunday’s F1 Spanish Grand Prix behind only the two Mercedes cars to cement his status as the best of the rest in the championship.
Even at this early stage of the season the top two positions in the championship look left to be fought between Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, while behind them Verstappen, Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc are locked in a fascinating battle over third.
Splitting the two Ferraris in qualifying was seen as a good result for Verstappen on Saturday but a lapse in judgement from Vettel at turn 1 of the Grand Prix handed the Red Bull driver a chance to grab third and he didn’t need a second invitation.
Once in the position Verstappen was able to simply pull away from his rivals and enjoy clean air aiding his tire life and giving him an easy job to manage his own race without too much pressure.
