Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen says he regrets not being able to take on Fernando Alonso — the Alonso who used to fight for podiums — in F1.
Verstappen, 21, is arguably an F1 great of the future. He grew up watching Alonso take on legends like Michael Schumacher. Alonso notched all 32 of his F1 victories by 2013, long before Verstappen was in the series.
Verstappen has been in Formula 1 since 2015, but he's never been in a race that saw Alonso even make a podium. Alonso failed to reach the podium in his final 85 career F1 races.
"It's a shame that I have never been able to face him," the Red Bull driver told France's Auto Hebdo. "Yes, he was in F1 when I got there, but I was never able to fight with him because he was at the back of the pack because of the problems they (McLaren) had. That is something I may regret.
"I raced Seb (Vettel), I raced Lewis (Hamilton) and it was a great experience, but I never raced Fernando. And it had always been him who was fighting against the others when I watched the races on TV."
