Officials in Miami are working toward a goal of a Formula 1 race for Miami for 2021.
If the City of Miami truly wants to host a Formula 1 race in 2021, officials have about six months to appease local opposition groups.
So says Miami Mayor Carlos Gimenez.
According to the Miami Herald, F1 and officials in the South Florida community have reached a deal in principle for a race in the Hard Rock Stadium district, home of the Miami Dolphins football team. Preparations, however, hit an early snag when opposition groups made key blocking moves at the Miami-Dade commission.
Mayor Gimenez used a veto to block the opposition earlier in November. And this week, an effort with the commission to override that veto failed as commissioners did not get the two-thirds majority vote needed to override the mayor’s veto.
“This race isn’t until May of 2021,” Gimenez told CBS TV in Miami. “Sustaining my veto buys three to six months so that we can at least get the parties that are involved together and we can continue to work toward a solution.”
The Formula One Group and Hard Rock Stadium CEO Tom Garfinkel said in similarly worded statements that they will now use the extra time to work “very hard to address community concerns in a meaningful way.”
