Robert Kubica made it back to F1 after suffering series leg, shoulder and arm injuries in a 2001 rally car crash.
Robert Kubica has confirmed that he will part ways with the Williams Formula 1 team at the end of the season, his first in F1 since 2010.
Kubica has scored Williams’ only point of the season with a 10th-place finish in the crazy, rain-affected German Grand Prix, but he is yet to outqualify rookie teammate George Russell. The German race is the one time that Kubica has finished higher than his teammate on a Sunday.
“I would like to thank the team for the last two years and for helping make my comeback to the Formula 1 grid possible,” said Kubica. “I have enjoyed my time with ROKiT Williams Racing, both as reserve and development driver and as a race driver this year, but I feel that the time is now right for me to move on to the next chapter in my career.”
Deputy team principal Claire Williams added, “I would like to thank Robert for his hard work and respect his decision to leave the team at the end of the 2019 season. Robert has been an important member of the team in both his role as reserve and development driver, and subsequently as one of our race drivers in 2019. We thank him for his continued efforts throughout what has been a challenging couple of seasons and wish him well in his future endeavors.”
Early speculation is that out-of-a-contract Renault driver Nico Hulkenberg will return to the team with which he made his F1 debut in 2010, but other rumors suggest the Canadian F2 driver Nicholas Latifi, the current test and reserve driver for the team, will gain a promotion.
