Williams rookie George Russell admits that he would be ‘lying’ if he didn’t admit that his team is currently dealing with the slowest car on the Formula 1 grid as preseason testing came to a close.
The past two decades has seen the Williams team going from championship winners to F1 backmarkers and if the evidence of testing is anything to go by, 2019 will be another R&D campaign for the family-owned squad.
While the majority of the field completed the test with a flourish of quick laps, Williams were almost three-seconds off the pace with Robert Kubica at the wheel. So, either the team didn’t see the value in going for a headline or they are in even more strife than was originally thought.
Russell didn’t hold back in his assessment but acknowledged that work was being done to fix the underlying problems.
"I’d be lying if I said we were not the slowest at the moment," he said. "That is a reality. It is clear we have some work to do, but was very positive is that we made a big step from when I jumped into the car on Tuesday, made a step since Robert was in the car yesterday.
"Hopefully when he jumps in again tomorrow, we will find another step. We understand the issues, we recognize that, and we are doing everything we can to rectify it.
"I’m definitely very happy with the number of laps we’ve done but we have not been able to do lap times, we still have a bit to find with the – we were up there but we’ve got work to do. We were a big step behind everybody else."
