Audi will fire Formula E driver Daniel Abt after it was discovered that he had a professional sim racer compete for him in a charity e-sports event, according to a report from Motorsport.com. This follows confirmation that Audi Formula E has already suspended Abt.
“Daniel Abt did not drive his car in qualifying and the race at the fifth event of the Race at Home Challenge on May 23 himself, but let a professional sim-racer do so,” a statement from Audi said. “He directly apologized for this on the following day and accepted the disqualification.”
The ringer that Abt brought in was Lorenz Hoerzing, a German pro sim racer. Abt was fined 10,000 Euros (about $10,976 at current exchange rates) for the cheat and was disqualified from the Berlin E-Prix. But based on this report, he’ll be losing his real-life seat with Audi permanently. This is a blow for him and for Audi, as Abt has competed in every Formula E race since the sport’s inception in 2014.
“I did not take it as seriously as I should have. I am especially sorry about this because I know how much work has gone into this project on the part of the Formula E organization,” Abt said in a statement. “I am aware that my offense has a bitter aftertaste, but it was never meant with any bad intention. Of course, I accept my disqualification from the race.”
