George Russell feels F1 could hurt rookies’ careers if they press ahead with plans to run newcomers in Friday practice sessions.
According to RaceFans.net, Formula 1 is debating making it mandatory for all teams to run rookie drivers in two of their Friday practices from 2021.
The drivers eligible would need to have contested not more than two grands prix.
But while the idea may have merit, Russell fears it puts too much pressure on the rookies who want to shine on the big stage.
“I think it’s a great idea to try and give more track time to rookie drivers,” the Williams rookie told RaceFans, “but personally I think [this approach] is not a good idea.
“Going in for an FP1 session, doing 20 laps, these young drivers are going to come in and try to prove what they have.
“You just can’t do it without good experience.
“So if anything it’s going to drivers’ careers more harm than do them good.”
