Scott Atherton will serve as grand marshal next weekend for his final race as IMSA president.
Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta is going to send out IMSA president Scott Atherton on a high note, as the outgoing executive will serve as grand marshal for next weekend’s Petit Le Mans.
Atherton revealed earlier this month his plans to retire at the end of the year, ending a career in motorsports that spanned over three decades.
The 10-hour endurance classic begins on Saturday, Oct. 12, at 12:05 p.m. ET and will conclude the division’s 50th anniversary season.
“Scott has been an instrumental partner in the growth of the Motul Petit Le Mans and the ongoing development of Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, including the new Michelin Tower,” track president and general manager Geoff Lee said. “We are excited to have him serve as this year’s grand marshal as we thank him for all that he has done for both this iconic race and IMSA.”
Atherton was the longtime president and CEO of Panoz Motor Sports Group. He then co-led the American Le Mans Series through the merger with the Grand American Road Racing Association under the IMSA banner in 2014, before taking up his current role.
The full week of activities includes season finale races that crown champions in four divisions — the WeatherTech Championship, IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, IMSA Prototype Challenge and Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama.
