British-born Carlin Racing driver Max Chilton set fastest time at the NTT IndyCar Series’ Spring Test Friday at Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca. Chilton clocked a fastest lap of 1:11.3490 before rain stopped the on-track action after five hours.
Rookie Felix Rosenqvist, driving for Chip Ganassi, was second-fastest with a 1:11.3289, and Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay was third at 1:11.3680.
Less than two seconds covered the fastest times of the entire 21-car field over the course of the test session, with veteran Will Power rounding it out at 1:13.30. The top 15 drivers were within less than a second of each other over the more-than-two-mile road course.
“This is the first time these open-wheel cars have returned to their spiritual road racing home in 15 years,” read a statement from the track. “The INDYCAR Spring Testing provides teams with a valuable opportunity to be reacquainted with the challenging 11-turn, 2.238-mile road course, many of whom will drive it for the first time.”
It was a good experience for both drivers and teams as the track will close out the Indycar season later this year when the Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey arrives Sept. 20-22.
