Current IndyCar driver Max Chilton knows what it’s like to be a talented driver struggling to make the top half of the grid in Formula 1.
In Chilton’s two-year run with the Marussia team in 2013 and 2014, he managed a career-best race finish of just 13th in 35 starts. Now with Carlin Racing in the NTT IndyCar Series, Chilton is able to race with just about everyone in the field.
And for Chilton, who still keeps one eye on the happenings in Formula 1, that makes a race day a lot more fun.
“Who isn’t watching Formula 1 if you’re into racing,” Chilton said this week in Detroit while on a promotional stop for the May 31-June 2 Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix presented by Lear weekend. “But I would definitely question if I was to ever go back (to F1), depending on what the team was.
“I used to be in Marussia — it was fantastic, I had some of the best days of my life. You had some good racing, but realistically, you’re fighting for 12th 13th position. It’s crazy how things turn around because at the moment in F1, Williams is like Marussia was — they can’t seem to get off the back row of the grid.
"I would have to pick which team I would be willing to go back to.”
