Haas’ Kevin Magnussen says if he is told he will never be World Champion, he will quit Formula 1 and focus on something else.
2019 will mark the Danish driver’s fifth season in the sport, and his third with American outfit Haas.
And while he accepts that the team will not be fighting the top three, he remains very much set on winning the Drivers’ Championship eventually.
“If I knew that we’d only finish fourth and that I’d never win a World Championship, if you could see into the future and you told me ‘you won’t win ever’, then I’d go to do something else that I can be successful in,” he told GPFans.
“None of us come here and work our asses off to finish fourth, but that’s the target this year.
“You can’t say ‘OK, I didn’t win so I’ll go home’, of course you need to try but you need to understand there is a process and a road to success.”
Team-mate Romain Grosjean predicts an extremely tight grid in 2019, but believes Haas’ VF-19 is in good shape to compete.
Speaking to The Checkered Flag, he said: “I think we’ve got a first idea [of where Haas fit into the competitive order], but it’s really difficult to read too much into it. I’d rather wait for the first few races to know where we are.
“It’s very sexy [the car]. It’s a beautiful car. It handles very well. The feeling in the car is better than it was last year.
“I think the team has done a really good job on its understanding of the new front wing and getting ready for the season to start. I’m really looking forward to driving the car on different kinds of circuits.”
Haas will be hoping for a far better Australian GP this time around, after Grosjean and Magnussen retired from the 2018 edition following botched pit-stops.
