Lando Norris should have taken more risks at Spanish GP

Lando Norris finished the Spanish Grand Prix in P10, but felt with more “risks” he could have scored better points.

After a rookie season where he showed a great deal of promise, Norris has really stepped up his game in 2020.

He scored his first career podium at the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix, and with a current points total of 39 sits P7 in the Drivers’ Championship.

At only one round so far this year has Norris failed to score points, and he added another to his tally with P10 at the Spanish Grand Prix.

That being said, with a few more risks he believes that a stronger haul of points would have been possible.

“I lost those two positions in the very beginning. Not off the line, my launch was really good, it was just more in to Turn 1 that I didn’t attack enough, I didn’t risk it enough, but sometimes it’s like that,” he told the Formula 1 website.

“Maybe we need to change it for next time, because it’s so difficult to overtake here as we know, and it was proven again this weekend. I think we had good pace, which was a shame because I couldn’t use it at all.

“And I felt much quicker than the guys ahead. It’s just a train and I couldn’t do anything. A little bit annoyed, but I need to do better next time.”

If he had been more aggressive then Norris feels he could have used his pace to work through the cars ahead.

And he was even more frustrated with himself because taking risks hasn’t been an area that he has struggled with previously.

“Maybe I should have taken more risk. I know it’s a very difficult track to overtake on and to race on so every little position is really going to help in the race – maybe I really should have risked more,” he admitted.

“But it’s not something I’ve always been struggling with – it’s something that I’ve improved on lots since last year and I’ve been taking the right amount of risk and this time I couldn’t take quite enough, and it backfired on me.

“Sometimes you win from it, sometimes you lose from it, that’s just the way it is. And this weekend it didn’t work out.”

Despite being P7 in the Drivers’ standings, Norris heads to the Belgian Grand Prix only six points behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc in P4.
