Reigning Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton claims he is “healthier and happier” than ever before now that he has become vegan.
It has been a strong start to the season for Hamilton as he goes in-search of a sixth Drivers’ Championship, but he has met his match so far in 2019 in team-mate Valtteri Bottas.
After a woeful 2018, the Finn retained his seat against the odds and now leads the Championship with a one-point advantage over Hamilton.
The Mercedes pair have secured four-consecutive one-two finishes this season, leaving rivals Ferrari reeling after they had been expected to enjoy a pace advantage over the Silver Arrows.
For 2019 a new minimum driver weight of 80kg for the driver/seat package has been introduced, and Hamilton, who claimed to have become vegan in September 2017, has taken advantage to bulk-up, gaining 15lb of muscle to move on from his previous weight of 150lb – a weight he had maintained since his debut in 2007.
On his official Instagram page, the five-time World Champion said: “Adding weight was easy and I did this on a vegan diet. People say ‘oh I need my protein and that’s why I could never go vegan’.”
“I have plenty of protein in my diet and I’ve gained muscle, and I’m healthier and happier than I’ve ever been. Wish I did it sooner.”
