Marcus Ericsson is hoping Charles Leclerc performs well at Ferrari because it would “reflect good on him”.
The pair were teammates at Alfa Romeo Sauber in 2018, but the rookie Monegasque driver impressed in his first season in Formula 1, prompting Ferrari to sign him up for the 2019 season.
Leclerc will partner four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel at the Scuderia, as the duo look to end Mercedes’ reign of terror in the turbo-hybrid era.
Ericsson will make the switch to IndyCar next year, with Sauber announcing Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi as their 2019 line-up.
The Swedish driver does hope to return to Formula One in the future, and hopes Leclerc “kicks some ass” at Ferrari to make him look a better driver.
Speaking to CRASH, he said: “I would be very interested to follow Charles at Ferrari.
“I think he can do really well, already next year.
“And of course if he does really well there it would reflect good on me, so let’s hope he kicks some ass over there!”
Mercedes junior driver Esteban Ocon also got involved with the Leclerc debate, saying he expects him to be a title contender in 2019.
“I think Charles will fight for the title next year for sure. At least it won’t be a surprise to me,” Ocon explained.
“I know he has a very good talent from day one.
“He’s one of the quickest guys out there, and I think he will show that next year, definitely.”
