Mattia Binotto receives Flavio Briatore's backing

Flavio Briatore has backed Ferrari’s decision to replace Maurizio Arrivabene as team boss, saying with “different management” 2018 could have yielded a different outcome.

With just over a month before Ferrari launch their 2019 car, codenamed the 670, the Scuderia gave team boss Arrivabene the boot on Monday.

Once again falling short of Mercedes’ standards, Ferrari had to settle for second in both of last year’s championships with Arrivabene’s head the one to roll.

He has been replaced by technical director Mattia Binotto, who has been credited with leading the brain trust behind Ferrari’s much-improved SF71H.

Former Benetton and Renault team boss has backed the decision.

“This year Ferrari had what it took to win the World Championship and did not do it,” he told Adnkronos.com.

“When things do not win, they have to change and I imagine that those who drive the Scuderia have thought the same.

“Binotto did an excellent job as technical director.

“This year Ferrari had a great car, very fast and with a different management of the drivers could have brought the World title home.”

The Italian, like many Ferrari fans, is now waiting to see who will replace Binotto as the Scuderia’s technical boss.

“Certainly I do not think it will have the dual role of team principal and TD, so we must also see who will replace the technical part.”
