Max Verstappen would choose blue over silver when painting his lounge but, metaphors aside, he says he won’t let rumours about his future affect his on-track performances.
The Dutchman is contracted to Red Bull for 2020 but will be a free agent after that.
Like Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel, he would only extend his deal as far as next season, the final year before the regulations change.
Verstappen has been linked to a move to Mercedes with father, Jos, close friends with Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff.
For now, though, blue is Verstappen’s number one choice.
“Blue,” he told Sport Bild when asked what colour he’d paint his lounge. “That’s my favourite color.”
Told that ‘blue is sold out’, he replied: “Then I would take silver.
“But that has nothing to do with Mercedes or Ferrari, silver just looks better on a wall than red.
“I know the rumours and the speculation, but they really don’t affect me at all.
“I know what I have to do at the end ofhe day: I have to drive as fast as I can. That’s what I enjoy.
“Whatever comes from the outside, nothing bothers me.”
This season the 22-year-old found a new rival in Charles Leclerc, enjoying thrilling battles against the Ferrari driver in Austria and again at the British Grand Prix.
Verstappen, though, believes the Monégasque driver is not the only youngster who he’ll have to fight for future World titles.
“I think it’s not just about Charles and me, there are a few good ones.
“Lando Norris is very talented, he is really good. Maybe George Russell but hard to judge in Williams.
“At the end of the day, several of this generation will fight for the title when the elders quit.”
