McLaren racing director, Zak Brown, has said that he will keep Fernando Alonso on “speed-dial” for any future Formula 1 opportunities.
Alonso has opted to leave Formula 1 at the end of the season because he feels the sport has become a “predictable and weak show”.
But, although the two-time World Champion is heading off for new challenges, he maintains a good relationship with McLaren as the two will join forces again for the Indy 500 in 2019.
On McLaren’s side, Brown has confirmed that the team would not delay in asking Alonso to come back to Formula 1 racing should the circumstances suit both parties.
“We certainly wouldn’t hesitate,” Brown told Reuters.
“If we needed a driver that’s not one of our current two, to have Fernando be the first on the speed-dial list.
“[Michael] Schumacher came back, [Alain] Prost came back. I wouldn’t rule that out.
“We’re very happy with our driver line-up for the future. That’s what we are very focused on at this moment, but never say never.
“He’s certainly driving at the top of his game.”
To honour what will be, as it stands, Alonso’s final race in Formula 1, the Spaniard will race with a special livery in Abu Dhabi.
