Cesar Gonzales certainly never saw, heard, felt the vibrations of, or smelled anything in his hometown of Nacogdoches, Texas, like the 11,000-horsepower, nitromethane-burning Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars he saw first up-close then on the Houston Raceway Park dragstrip Friday.
Gonzales, 26, was one of 27 students from Lone Star College Harris-North and San Jacinto College who helped Mopar and Pennzoil launch the Mopar Career Automotive Program (CAP) “Assemble Your Future” initiative during the opening day of the Mopar Express Lane NHRA SpringNationals. They spent the day taking a behind-the-scenes peek at the Don Schumacher Racing teams of Top Fuel driver Leah Pritchett and Funny Car racer Matt Hagan.
“I’ve never experienced anything like this,” Gonzales said. “I thought I had a pretty good understanding of what it was going to take to have a career, now that I’ve been part of this Mopar CAP program. I’m learning a lot more. Today has been incredible. I’ve met some great people and talked with a lot of people from dealerships that are looking for service technicians.”
