Longtime NASCAR crew chief Nick Harrison died early Sunday morning, his Kaulig Racing team confirmed.
Harrison, 37, was in his first season serving as crew chief for Kaulig driver Justin Haley and was at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on Saturday working with Haley as he finished 13th in the Roxor 200.
“It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nick Harrison, our beloved crew chief of the No. 11 car at Kaulig Racing,” a team statement said. “Please keep Nick’s family in your thoughts and prayers at this time.”
No cause of death or funeral arrangements were announced but the team said more information would be forthcoming.
Harrison, of Columbia, Tenn., was a five-time winner in the Xfinity Series, his first coming at Phoenix Racing in 2012 with driver Kurt Busch. His most recent series win came last season with driver Austin Dillon at Richard Childress Racing.
NASCAR released the following statement on Harrison’s death: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of longtime crew chief Nick Harrison, and offer our thoughts, prayers and support to his family, friends and Kaulig Racing colleagues.”
Harrison has also served as a crew chief in the Cup series in 120 races, most recently in 2014 with driver Brian Scott at RCR.
According to his bio on the Kaulig Racing Web site, “Growing up in the shadows of former Cup Series driver Sterling Marlin, racing is all he has ever known. When he’s not atop the pit box calling a race, Nick enjoys playing golf, attending local sporting events and hanging out with his dog.”
Several of the drivers Harrison had worked with over the years posted their condolences on social media on Sunday.
