Formula 1 managing director, Ross Brawn, has said that teams are interested in joining the sport – but don’t expect to see any before 2022.
The blueprint for the 2021 season and beyond are at an advanced stage and will be finalised in October, with the hope that more competitive racing and a more sustainable infrastructure is just around the corner.
Whilst Formula 1 are also hoping to attract new teams, Brawn has warned that they just won’t be accepting anyone and that they are also going to have to wait until the 2021 regulations have been properly ironed out.
“We have a surprising number of teams who have shown an interest [in joining F1],” Brawn told Sky Sports F1.
“But what we’ve said to those teams is ‘let’s get these new rules introduced, let’s stabilise the situation, let’s get everything working properly before we seek more teams’.
“I think with the 10 teams we have, 10 healthy teams is actually enough. If we do get an extra teams then they have really have to add to the show.
“We must learn from history. Some of these small teams came and went and didn’t really add to Formula 1.
“We are going to stabilise what we are introducing in 2021 and then look at whether there is an opportunity for more teams.”
