Robert Kubica has described the Williams FW42 of last year as a “mobile chicane” in an interview with a Polish publication.
Kubica’s remarkable return to the Formula 1 grid led to an unremarkable season with Williams as they raced almost exclusively at the very back of the grid for 21 straight race weekends.
The Pole managed to scrape Williams’ one and only point following a double disqualification for Alfa Romeo at the German Grand Prix, but the frustration of last season is still prevalent when talking about his comeback campaign.
“I feel like I was in a mobile chicane,” Kubica said in an interview with Przeglad Sportowy.
“You try to lead the way as efficiently as possible and not waste too much time, but then you understand that if you leave a second or a second and a half, practically nothing changes .
“The same goes for the start: you try to take risks, trying to overtake one or two drivers on the first lap, but then you wonder if it is worth it since they will overtake you again in a few corners. ”
Kubica is doubling up his reserve driver duties at Alfa Romeo with a drive in DTM with BMW in 2020 and, while he is not completing ruling out another Formula 1 return, he concedes that his time may be up.
Everything is possible, but I am aware that I may not return to the grid in the future,” Kubica added.
“Formula 1 is Formula 1: five or six years ago no one believed that I would be back, but I never closed the door and I did it.”
The Pole is the first driver in the new Alfa Romeo at pre-season testing in Barcelona, which begins on Wednesday at the Circuit de Catalunya.
