Romain Grosjean: Haas still midfield benchmark

Romain Grosjean believes Haas are still the midfield team to beat despite their struggles so far in 2019.

Both Grosjean and team-mate Kevin Magnussen have struggled to get their tyres into the operating window, resulting in poor race performance.

The pair had been regular features of the top 10 in qualifying, highlighting that the pace was indeed there, but last time out in Baku was a disaster for the American team, with both drivers failing to make the top ten, while Magnussen finished where he started in P13 and Grosjean retired with braking issues.

Despite now languishing in P8 in the Constructors’ Championship, Grosjean insists this does not accurately reflect Haas’ potential, and warned that their midfield rivals should see them as the team to aim for.

“The baseline of the car is still the best in the midfield, to be fair,” he tolf F1i.com.

“I believe downforce and so on is there, but if you can’t get the tyres to work, whatever you have, it doesn’t seem to be working.

“I don’t think it’s [due to] downforce, I believe we have more downforce than some other cars in the midfield. They can run the tyres, so it has to be somewhere else.”

Haas will bring major upgrades to the Spanish Grand Prix, but Grosjean did a good job or spelling out the extremes which the team could encounter with them.

“I’m going to try the update for Barcelona, it’s quite a big one and hopefully it helps,” he said.

“But if we don’t get the tyres in the window it’s just pointless.”
