The original Ford Mustang GT350 lasted just five years. And if internal documents obtained by Speedtwitch are any indication, the new GT350 will have the same five-year run. Looking at 2021 information, we can see the GT500, but no GT350.
As a consolation prize, we might get a new Mustang Mach 1—again, if these documents are real—sitting in between the 460-hp GT V8 and the 760-hp GT500. We’re not sure what updates it will include, but the original Mach 1 came with a better suspension, visual enhancements and the choice of a bunch of hi-po V8s. And remember, the Bullitt Mustang was already an upgrade to the GT with 20 more hp and the Performance Pack 1 option. So the path is drawn.
Put a few Mach 1 decals on it, maybe a Shaker-style hood with pins, a few more ponies and poof, we’re there.
Ford has no comment on future product, but the company did just introduce an updated 2020 GT350R around Christmas—check out our first drive here—so it would be curious to cancel it on the heels of that refresh. Also, a few model years of a special edition, be it GT350, Bullitt or Mach 1, is a good plan in our eyes. Everyone gets to feel like they bought something unique.
Finally, when the first Mustang Mach 1 came out in 1969, it sold so well Ford canceled the GT. That won’t happen this time. We’ll guarantee it.
