Another day, another F1 personality weighing in on Sebastian Vettel’s future and this time it is Mika Hakkinen.
Vettel is out of contract with Ferrari at the end of this season with pretty much every second rumour about his future contradicting the previous one.
Some claim Ferrari has offered him a one-year deal, others say he has turned that down and now we are being told that no offer has yet been put on the table. Oh wait, expect this year two-year deal.
So he may be staying at Ferrari for 2021 or a year longer. Or he may be heading to McLaren to replace Carlos Sainz who is one of the favourites to take his Ferrari seat.
The notoriously private German is not saying anything, keeping his cards close to his chest and leaving it up to the rest of the world to speculate.
But whatever happens and wherever he goes, double World Champion Hakkinen says he will be an assist to the team.
“I think Sebastian’s future depends solely on his personal motivation,” the Finn told t-online.de.
“In terms of age, he can still race for many years.
“The life of a Formula 1 driver demands a lot from you and takes up a large part of your life.
“So if Sebastian wants to continue after this season, he would be a great addition – for every team.
“Sebastian is a big personality, and not just because of his four World Championship titles.”
With four titles to his name, Vettel sit two behind long-time rival Lewis Hamilton.
Hakkinen believes it will be very difficult for Vettel and the rest of the field to halt Hamilton’s charge towards a seventh World title.
“Lewis is a very mature driver, he makes little or no mistakes, knows his car inside out and is still learning,” he said. “It is no coincidence that he has already won six World titles.
“If Mercedes puts him back in such a fast and reliable car, it will be very, very difficult for the rest of the field.”
He added: “The big three Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull will continue to be at the top.
“Of course, it would also be nice for the fans if new teams and drivers made it onto the podium. I hope my friends at McLaren make further progress and Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris will be on the podium more often.”
