Supercars star Garth Tander will make a surprise appearance behind the wheel of the S5000 car on the streets of Newcastle on Sunday.
Tander will jump straight out of his Garry Rogers Motorsport Holden after Supercars qualifying and into the 560-horsepower open-wheeler for a handful of demo laps.
He’ll be the third high-profile driver to sample the car on the Newcastle circuit, following demo runs from four-time Bathurst 1000 winner Greg Murphy and former Australian Drivers’ Champion John Bowe.
Tander is no stranger to the S5000 concept, having driven both the bespoke prototype and the Swift-based Formula Thunder 5000 car before the switch to the Onroak-Ligier chassis.
He even spent a full day in the FT5000 car at Phillip Island during early development, that car having run the same V8 engine and Holinger gearbox that’s now fitted to the new-spec chassis.
The demo run will make Tander the second current full-time Supercars driver to pedal the S5000, with Nissan’s Andre Heimgartner having been part of a small group to drive the car at Sydney Motorsport Park last Monday.
Bathurst-winning co-driver Luke Youlden also drove the car at SMP, setting an unofficial lap record on the circuit’s short loop.
