The Saleen Cup single-make series, which made its debut last summer as a support series for SRO America events, has been canceled. A Saleen spokesperson confirmed the news to Sportscar365, saying the company plans to shift its focus on development of its upcoming Saleen S1 GT4 race car.
Just four Saleen Cup races took place before the series folded. It was just over a month ago we published our track review of the spec S1 track car that’s used in the series, calling the whole package “incredibly promising.”
As Sportscar365 points out, plans were already in place for the series to continue into 2020. It’s still listed on the timetable for SRO America’s season-opener at Circuit of the Americas in Austin.
“At this time, we have decided to allocate our resources to racing in the GT4 series, in lieu of a second Saleen Cup season this year,” a Saleen spokesperson said in a statement to Sportscar365. “Forgoing a Saleen Cup this year will allow us to expand our GT4 racing program with additional entries and team support.”
Despite turning its focus to its GT4 car, Saleen has confirmed it won’t be ready in time for the Pirelli GT4 America SprintX season opener at Circuit of the Americas. It instead plans to makes its season debut at Long Beach in April.
