Mercedes boss, Toto Wolff, has not ruled out missing more race weekends if or when the 2020 Formula 1 season gets underway.
At the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix, where both Drivers’ and Constructors’ titles were wrapped up once again for another year, Wolff skipped his first race since 2013 and said he was staying in Europe to “focus on other open topics”.
Mercedes technical director James Allison took over Wolff’s duties for that particular weekend and he could have that responsibility again in 2020.
“For 2020 I am the team principal at Mercedes, even if I may divide my time differently and not be at every race,” Wolff told Osterreich newspaper.
“I want to do my part to ensure that Lewis Hamilton wins the seventh title.”
Wolff also said in a recent interview on the Mercedes YouTube channel: “One of the strengths of our organisation is empowerment.
“If one of us was to be sidelined completely, the rest of the pack would pick up the ball and run with it.
“That is a benefit that is special to the Mercedes F1 team.”
Wolff, meanwhile, has said he has been keeping in contact with Lewis Hamilton during the lockdown period and the six-time World Champion is still as motivated and hungry as ever to make it seven.
“He was used to travelling a lot but now there is a standstill for him too,” said Wolff.
“But he knows how to use the situation positively.
“He will come back with even greater motivation than before and he assures me of that in every phone call.”
