Vettel on Red Bull form: 'I don't think they've found anything'

Sebastian Vettel does not feel Red Bull have found anything special as their rich vein form continued ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Vettel’s former team have two wins in the last four races thanks to Max Verstappen, who clinched his first-ever pole position and Honda’s first since 2006 on Saturday after a thrilling qualifying session at the Hungaroring.

But, whilst Red Bull have been showing signs of arguably being the form team in Formula 1 at the moment and Lewis Hamilton wary of the threat they are posing, Vettel sees things differently.

“It’s down to downforce,” Vettel told Sky Sports F1 after he qualified P5, 0.499 seconds off pole position.

“I don’t think they’ve found anything, they were quick already the weeks before coming here.

“Obviously they have a bit of a disadvantage on the engine side, but coming here, the engine is not important, so we knew they’d be strong and we knew Mercedes would be strong, but obviously we can’t be happy sitting further back and not being able to intervene in that fight.

“Hopefully the tyres can melt, and we end up with more stops than one, otherwise it will be difficult.”

As Vettel does not think Red Bull have found anything extra in Hungary, his ex-boss Christian Horner was quick to give full credit to Honda for giving Verstappen the necessary power he needed to land a historic pole.

“All credit to Honda,” Horner said.

“We couldn’t do this without them it’s great for them and a great team effort. Everyone at Milton Keynes is doing a great job and that allows us to get on the front row here.

“Progress [with the car] is being made in all areas, the power unit and chassis are working well.”

Horner also had high praise for Verstappen, who nabbed pole position away from Valtteri Bottas by a mere 0.018 seconds.

“The margins are so tight around here and Max was on fire this afternoon,” he added.

“He was quickest in pretty much every section and he needed to nail the last corner as Valtteri was slightly ahead. That’s fantastic for him to get his first pole.”
