Williams to celebrate 50 years of Sir Frank at Silverstone

Williams will sport a series of special messages on the FW42 as Sir Frank Williams celebrates his 50th year in charge of the team.

The British Grand Prix serves as the home race for Williams and also the venue of their first win in the series when Clay Regazzoni took victory in 1979.

This weekend will mark the 824th race of Sir Frank’s reign at the helm of Williams, which included his time with the original entry which competed from 1969-76.

Deputy Team Principal Claire Williams handles the bulk of day-to-day affairs now due to the injuries suffered by Sir Frank.

He was left wheelchair bound after a car crash in 1986, and as a result his attendance at races has become more sporadic over the years.

2019 has been a struggle for Williams, but while they most likely won’t be fighting for points, the team are looking forward to paying tribute to their principal and giving George Russell his first experience of a home race.

Speaking to the media, Williams senior race engineer Dave Robson said: “We are looking forward to our home race, facing the challenges of this iconic circuit and continuing our progress.

“This will be George’s first experience of a home Formula One race and the power of the local British crowd, and a great opportunity for him to understand how to harness this support.

“With this race so close to our base, we also welcome the fact that Sir Frank will be able to join us over the weekend as we celebrate his 50th anniversary as a Formula One Team Principal.”
