Zak Brown firmly believes James Key will be working for McLaren next season but he doesn’t know exactly when.
McLaren announced earlier this year that Key would be leaving Toro Rosso and heading to Woking.
Toro Rosso immediately quashed that, adamant that they have a long-term deal with the technical director.
There were rumours that Key could be released earlier if McLaren signed over Lando Norris, however, the team instead gave the British youngster a 2019 race seat.
Brown, though, says it is only a matter of time before Key joins the McLaren tema.
“James will be with us next year,” McLaren CEO Brown insisted on Friday in Abu Dhabi.
“Obviously we’ve recruited him because we think he’s immensely talented.
“Pat Fry and Andrea Stella and the whole design team are working really well together.
“This is part of a recovery journey, and with that is getting the right people in place – and that doesn’t happen overnight.
“So we’re excited for him to start, but he’s had no input or communication as it relates to the 2019 car.”
Pushed on when Key is expected to arrive in Woking, Brown said: “Some point.”
