Tech center manager Jason Scudellari Shows how a hidden PCV valve keeps your engine compartment looking show ready.
All engines need some sort of crankcase pressure relief. Whether it’s in the form of a simple breather, or a more effective PCV system, you need a way to vent blowby gases inherently generated by a running engine. If you don’t, you’ll be constantly mopping oil off your garage floor, because the pressure will find a way out somehow, whether through the rear main seal, timing cover, valve covers You get the point.
A positive crankcase ventilation system is a simple but very effective means of mitigating combustion blowby gases. It uses engine vacuum through a metered valve, the PCV valve, to draw crankcase vapors back into the intake manifold to be burned in the combustion process. As an added benefit, pulling a vacuum on the crankcase helps all the gaskets and seals do their job to prevent leaks.
