There is a six-speed gearbox which sends power to the rear via a final shaft drive and both motorcycles have top speed of more than 200 kmph. The variable camshaft control BMW ShiftCam is basically the engine getting variable valve timing and differential valve lift on a motorcycle in order to offer better spread of torque across the rev range, refinement and also reducing emissions and increasing fuel consumption.

In terms of rider electronics, both motorcycles get two riding modes as standard along with automatic stability control, ABS and hill start control as well. Apart from the electronics, the R 1250 RT also gets tyre pressure control, cruise control, keyless ride along with optional features such as heated seats, riding modes pro and headlight pro package.
