10 Biggest News Stories of the Week: GMC Yukon, Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport Come Up Short

When it comes to the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, less really is more: smaller size and fewer seats but more per-occupant space and a more stylish appearance as a result. In this week’s No. 3 most popular news story on Cars.com, our rapid-fire rundown of the Atlas Cross Sport’s pros and cons cheer the SUV for its massive backseat, athletic performance, competitive cargo space, newly available safety and convenience tech features, and palatable price, but jeers it for lack of driving differentiation from the regular Atlas, uninspiring interior and lackluster gas mileage for the V-6 engine option. Despite the overall competitive promise it shows, the Atlas Cross Sport just wasn’t enough to stop car shoppers’ eyes from wandering.

Our top two stories this week are both advisory in their own way for prospective car buyers. Numero uno is the May edition of our monthly list of recommendations for the best deals we could find on new cars. The current lineup includes the Buick Regal Sportback, the Ford EcoSport and the GMC Acadia, so be sure to check out the specifics by following the link to this week’s No. 1 article.

Meanwhile, at No. 2 is our breakdown of why shoppers should consider that SUV-binge-besieged body style, the sedan, in these economically uncertain times amid the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic; for example, sedans are generally less expensive than SUVs and get better fuel economy. Rounding out the top five are our (rather disappointing, depending on your expectations) rundown of the mpg and towing capacities of the redesigned for 2021 GMC Yukon lineup, at No. 4, and our report on the surprisingly low number of motorists availing themselves of auto-insurance discounts related to COVID-19 relative to the wide availability of financial relief options.
