2019 Detroit Autorama: Your Behind The Scenes Pre-Show First Look

The show cars are moving in to Cobo Center. When STREET RODDER showed up on Wednesday morning, the place was in transition. The few remaining exhibitors from last weekend’s Detroit Boat Show were being hauled out and the rods, customs, classics, custom trucks, muscle cars, street machines, lowriders, and racecars were rolling in for the 2019 Detroit Autorama.

The 67th Annual Meguiar’s Detroit Autorama Presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts doesn’t open to spectators until Friday, but the participating builders and owners are already in the building unloading trailers, finding their displays areas, and prepping their vehicles prior to opening day. Today, it’s a little chaotic, but when the doors of Cobo Center open on Friday, the Detroit Autorama will be ready to roll.

The entire weekend will be packed with activity and STREET RODDER will be taking it all in. The main floor is the site of the annual Cavalcade Of Customs, club displays, vendor booths, and the popular Auto Art Panel Jam. Celebrities from every aspect of our hobby will be in attendance as always. This year, we’re looking forward to seeing builders Gene Winfield, Carl Casper, Dave Kindig, and others including Horny Mike from Count’s Kustoms and the cast of Countings Cars, plus NASCAR racer Tony Stewart. Downstairs, the Autorama Extreme event will feature hundreds of locally built, traditionally styled hot rods and customs.

STREET RODDER will be sharing it all with you. Keep checking in to see coverage of the Great 8 cars competing for the prestigious Ridler Award in addition to our own picks for the  Best Ford In A Ford and Top 100 awards. And on Sunday, we’ll give you an immediate look at the 2019 Ridler Award winner.

We are lucky to be here early to witness some of that energy that the general public doesn’t get to see—the behind the scenes activity of the move-in days and the preparation that goes into getting everyting just right for what Championship Auto Shows proudly calls “America’s Greatest Hot Rod Show.”
