2019 Hyundai Kona Electric Trim Comparison: SEL Vs Ultimate

How does the base Kona Electric compare to the range-topping trim level?

The base 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric SEL carries a starting MSRP of $36,950. There are two other trim levels available: Limited ($41,400) and Ultimate ($44,900). Out of Spec Motoring takes an in-depth look at the base features as compared to those in the top-of-the-line Ultimate model. What do you get? Is it worth an extra ~$8,000?

It’s important to note that all Kona EVs qualify for the full $7,500 U.S. federal EV tax credit. So, if your tax situation allows you to take advantage of that, you’re looking at $30,495 versus $38,445 including destination.

Mechanically, the two Hyundai electric crossover trims are the same: single-motor, front-wheel drive, 64-kWh battery pack, and standard DC fast charging capability. In terms of range, you’ll get an EPA-estimated 258 miles out of either trim.

From the outside, the cars look very similar. However, the differences are much more clear inside the cabin with specific regard to technology and convenience features. In addition, the Ultimate comes standard with a longer list of advanced safety aids.

Out of Spec Motoring dives much deeper into the little details. Check out the video and then scroll down to let us know your takeaways in the comment section.

Kona Electric | SEL vs Ultimate

Kyle tests the base vs maxed out trim on the Hyundai Kona EV to find out what you get for the $8k price difference here in the US.

Two edits: Ultimate also has a heated steering wheel which is great in the winter time. Also, the Ultimate has a radar sensor whereas the SEL doesn’t. This is likely what is used for pedestrian detection and adaptive cruise control.
