Exactly three years ago, Audi introduced the second-generation A5 Coupe and Sportback, then came the S5 and RS5 derivatives, the former which was just given an updated mild-hybrid powertrain earlier this year. Now, the entire range has been given a facelift, featuring updated looks and technology.
To start off, the front fascia gets a wider and flatter Singleframe grille, which comes with either horizontal slats or honeycomb mesh, depending on the model. There’s also revised headlights with new LED daytime running light graphics, bolder fog lamp housing with integrated air inlets, as well as a bold blade that forms the lower edge of the bumper.
Round the side, there’s a new sill that makes the car look slimmer, while the rear end gets new sequential LED tail lights and a new diffuser insert with trapezoidal tailpipes to emphasise width. The A5 comes with a choice of 12 exterior paint finishes, and all variants of the A5 will get LED headlights as standard. Audi’s Matrix LED headlights, as well as the Matrix LED headlights with laser light and sequential turn indicators, are optional.
Inside, the cabin is suitably updated to match the changes on the 2020 Audi A4. New features include the updated, full HD 12.3-inch virtual cockpit, and a freestanding 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a new operating system and acoustic feedback, which frees up the clutter in the centre tunnel. The MMI search function is now based on text input and natural-language voice control.
The range-topping MMI navigation plus system adds new navigational functions such as the ability to suggest routes based on those previously driven. Audi connect infotainment services are available too (upgradable on a three-month subscription basis), offering various web-based features such as up-to-the-minute news, Google Earth mapping and Street View and flight, weather, traffic and fuel pricing information. A head-up display is optional.
For engines, the updated A5 models can be had with a range of TFSI and TDI engines, with outputs ranging from 163 PS to 347 PS. All engines are Euro 6d-temp emissions compliant. At launch, four models of the A5 will get the 12-volt mild-hybrid electrical system, whereas the S5 TDI will get the more powerful 48-volt electrical system. Both MHEV systems are said to improve fuel efficiency by up to 0.4 litres per 100 km, and offers quicker and smoother engine start-stop function.
The engines are married to either a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch or eight-speed conventional automatic (tiptronic) transmissions, while the three most powerful engines in the line-up get quattro all-wheel drive as standard. Of course, the AWD system can be had as a cost option for mid-range models as well.
To commemorate the occasion, Audi will introduce a special edition model for all Sportback and Coupe models, fitting them with sport suspension, S line exterior kit with blacked-out trims, and special paints such as quantum gray, Daytona gray with pearl effect, and district green metallic. For the interior, customers can choose between the design selection and S line packages.
