2020 Mercedes-AMG A35 sedan: Meet your 302-hp A-Class

As expected, the new-generation A-Class sedan will get an AMG treatment similar to that of the rabid AMG CLA45. The Mercedes-AMG A35 sedan will hustle along the roadways with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four under the hood that sends 302 hp to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The potent powertrain can haul the AMG A35 from a standing start to 60 mph in a scant 4.7 seconds — as quick as a Lamborghini Countach.

Of course, an AMG model is more than just a hopped-up engine and a low 0-60 time. The folks at Mercedes-Benz and AMG also reinforced the body, which should make the A35 sedan stiffer and more capable around a racetrack — or the corner near your house. The A35 sedan will come standard with a set of 18-inch alloy wheels, but you’ll be able to option up to a set of 19-inch rollers.

On the inside, the AMG 35 shares a lot of the standard A-Class interior — not a bad thing. The lighting and the MBUX media system both carry over, which means you’ll be able to light the inside of your A35 sedan like a discotheque and control your media system’s functions by voice. The instrumentation is all digital, with a wide gauge cluster like you’d see on an S65. The A35 will also introduce a new generation of AMG steering wheels, which feature a flat bottom, perforated leather grips and red contrast stitching.

The standard 4Matic all-wheel-drive system will help you transfer all 302 hp to the ground in the best way possible. The front-biased system can throw all the power at the front wheels but can split the power 50:50 front and rear if traction conditions require it.

Alongside the standard AMG drive modes (slippery, comfort, sport, sport-plus and individual), the AMG A35 sedan introduces a system called AMG Dynamics. It has essentially two modes — basic and advance — and affects the electronic stability control and brake systems. The goal is to help the driver be sharper, without obviously interfering.

Right now there’s no word on price, top speed or when the A35 sedan will hit dealer showrooms. You can probably expect it to make its domestic debut at the New York auto show in April, hopefully with more news about at least how much this thing will cost.
