Appearing on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, two car experts spoke about a case in which a learner driver failed their test due to the vehicle being classed as “too dirty”. A driving examiner determined that the learner should fail the driving test because there were pencil rubber filings on the carpet of the instructor’s car.

The 17-year-old from St Michael’s in Lancashire was told by her examiner that they would not conduct the test because the car didn’t meet Covid-safe cleanliness standards.

The father of the learner driver said they were “distraught” by the news, saying a second opinion on the cleanliness of the car was refused.

Presenter Adil Ray called the ordeal “extraordinary” and welcomed two guests to discuss the polarising subject.

Neil Gaughan, a celebrity driving instructor from Hertfordshire, appeared on Good Morning Britain to explain how the state of the car can affect the driver.

He said: “It’s a work environment for the examiner and obviously the instructor and the person learning to drive.

“You’ve got to have a nice clean car.

“You don’t want to be distracted by having bottles and cans and paper all over the car.

“Whether it’s rubber shavings or cans, whatever it may be, that’s a distraction for the examiner and the learner driver.

“What the instructor could have done and should have done was have a mini vacuum cleaner, take two seconds to vacuum it up and job done.”

In response to Mr Gaughan, another car expert, Yianni Charalambous, weighed in on the issue, criticising the original decision from the instructor.

The celebrity car customiser said: “This is absolutely ridiculous.

“First of all, 17-and-18-year-olds don’t even clean their room, let alone clean their car.
