All the Pickup Truck News: We’re Still Talking About the Cybertruck

Tesla’s Cybertruck dominated an otherwise slow week of pickup truck news, but other relevant stories include recalls affecting the 2019 Ford Ranger and 2019-20 GM full-size pickups.

The Cybertruck has at least the chance to be a successful — if unusual — pickup truck, though it remains to be seen whether its polarizing looks and all-electric powertrain might turn off traditional truck buyers. A claimed 3,500-pound payload capacity and towing capacities of up to 14,000 pounds are nothing to scoff at, but the utility of the vault — what Tesla is calling the enclosed bed area — will have to wait until we can test one. At this point, the Cybertruck is still a bundle of ambitious promises we hope Tesla can keep.

As for the recalls: More than half a million model-year 2019-20 Chevrolet Silverado 1500s and 2500/3500s plus GMC Sierra 1500s and 2500/3500s are under a recall if equipped with carpeted floor mats, as seat belt pretensioners may vent hot gas and cause the mats to ignite. More than 70,000 model-year 2019 Ford Rangers are under recall because of a potential issue with the electrical connector terminal that might cause the taillights to work intermittently or not at all. If you own any of the above pickups, see full details on the recalls below for more.
