Bangkok 2019: A90 Toyota Supra Thai launch this year

The main car on Toyota’s 2019 Bangkok International Motor Show (BIMS) stage is none other than the new Toyota GR Supra. The fifth-generation A90 Supra is on preview at BIMS, and will be coming to Thailand later this year, Toyota Motor Thailand president Michinobu Sugata said in his speech.

The confirmation of a Thai Supra launch follows Malaysia’s UMW Toyota Motor announcing the impending arrival of the reborn icon last month. The Supra will also be launching “this year” in our market. Nothing on specs and pricing, yet.

Elsewhere in the world, two engine choices are available for the BMW Z4’s celebrity platform-mate. The range starts with a 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 197 PS and 320 Nm of torque from 1,450 to 4,200 rpm.

The same engine is also available in a higher state of tune, producing 258 PS and 400 Nm from 1,550 to 4,400 rpm. They’re essentially BMW engines in 20i and 30i specs, respectively. One does 0-100 km/h in 6.5 seconds and the other in 5.2 seconds.

The other motor is a 3.0 litre turbocharged inline-six – as per the G29 Z4 M40i – that serves up 340 PS and 500 Nm from 1,600 to 4,500 rpm. The top Supra takes just 4.3 seconds to complete the benchmark century sprint. All engines are mated to an torque converter eight-speed ZF automatic transmission, with drive going to the rear wheels. There’s no manual option.

It’s not always that a performance flagship of a Japanese brand is sold as an official import in our part of the world, so Toyota’s intention to make the Supra its halo car in Thailand and Malaysia is to be applauded.
