Car insurance SHOCK: Surprise thing that can get you cheaper cover than a no claims bonus

UK motorists could save themselves a lot of money off the cost of their car insurance for a surprising reason. A new study found that having points on your licence could get you a better discount than a zero no-claims bonus. The research, conducted by Vantage Licence, found that insurance quotes were nearly 10 per cent on average for having nine points on their licence compared to a no-claims bonus. Motorists with six point on their licence also managed to get cheaper premium costs that someone with a one, two or three years no-claims discount.

For the longest amount of time drivers have been encouraged to build up their no-claims bonus to help slash the cost of cover.

No-claims discounts can slash the cost of your insurance cover as it proves that you are a safe and reliable driver.

However, this shocking research seems to suggest that the no-claims discount isn’t as effective of a discount as some other things could be.

Vantage Leasing managing director, Rob Walker, said: “The research is eye-opening, dispelling common myths including that penalty points could spell disaster when it comes to insurance costs.

“We also see how the latest trends in car crime such as keyless theft can impact how insurers view risk – hence why parking on the road at night is often cheaper.

“While the research shows what a typical male or female driver can expect, it doesn’t cover every eventuality, and some may find their circumstances produce different results.

“It does, however, provide some intriguing insights into the ever-evolving nature of vehicle insurance.”

Motorists could slash the cost of their cover by using telematics or black box you could save hundreds for the cost of cover.

Drivers are also encouraged to shop around for the best deal on their insurance and remove any unnecessary clauses from their insurance.
