The likes of the ULEZ in London and other Clean Air Zones (CAZ) in cities like Bath and Birmingham are becoming more common, with councils doing more to lower pollution rates. Charging Clean Air Zones fall under four classes – Class A, B, C and D.

Class A covers buses, coaches and taxis, Class B affects buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles and heavy goods vehicles, while Class C goes a step further bringing buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles, heavy goods vehicles, vans and minibuses under its remit.

Class D is the toughest of the lot covering buses, coaches, taxis, private hire vehicles, heavy goods vehicles, vans, minibuses and cars, plus the local authority has the option to include motorcycles.

Cities like Oxford, Bradford, Bristol, Manchester and Newcastle will be implementing a CAZ in the next few months or at the start of the new year.

According to the Transport for London website: “Petrol cars that meet the ULEZ standards are generally those first registered with the DVLA after 2005, although cars that meet the standards have been available since 2001.

“Diesel cars that meet the standards are generally those first registered with the DVLA after September 2015.”

New research from heycar has found the 2017 Ford Fiesta to be the best ULEZ exempt car.

The car dealer rated the Fiesta 10 out of 10, highlighting its huge range of trims and engines, as well as its refined drive style.

The Skoda Octavia came in at a close second with its all round performance being praised.

Heycar also included the car in their ‘cars that are built like tanks’ sections given its family-car size and its entry level 1.4-litre TSI petrol engine.

If drivers want to use the car for towing trailers or caravans, the 2.0-litre diesel engine is recommended, although it is advised to check TfL’s ULEZ checker.

The ever-reliable Toyota Prius Hybrid comes in third place thanks to its accessible price, low running costs and a five-year warranty.

Under the bonnet, there’s a 1.8-litre petrol engine working with an electric to self-charge the Prius – which means there are no plugs or charging required – though Toyota does offer a plug-in version.
