Chevrolet Bolt Misses IIHS Top Safety Pick Due To Poor Headlights

Chevrolet Bolt EV is one of the safest small cars on the market, but a few things need to be improved to score higher.

The 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV was recently tested by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) and performed pretty well in overall crashworthiness tests. However, two things lowered the overall result.

The first problem that prevented the Bolt from earning the Top Safety Pick rating is “Poor” headlights, which cause too much glare, according to IIHS.

The second problem is the “Acceptable” result of the Small overlap front: passenger-side crash test:

“The Bolt, a small car, also performed well in the IIHS crashworthiness tests. It earns good ratings in all of them except for the passenger-side small overlap test, in which it rates acceptable.

In that test, the passenger dummy’s movement was less than ideal. After hitting the frontal airbag during the test, the dummy’s head moved toward the gap between the frontal and side airbags, leaving it vulnerable to contact with hard parts of the vehicle interior.

The acceptable passenger-side rating would have been enough for the Bolt to earn a Top Safety Pick award when equipped with optional front crash prevention, but the Bolt’s only available headlights earn a poor rating, primarily because of excessive glare to oncoming drivers.

Overall, it seems that the Bolt EV, as a small car, can be considered pretty safe. If only GM will be willing to improve the headlights then it might get the Top Safety Pick next time.
