Removing frost can be simple with common tools such as a de-icer pick and spray while homemade methods can be just as effective in battling off brutal weather conditions.

De-icer tools

The most common way of removing frost and ice from a vehicle is with a de-icer tool or spray which can be purchased from most local stores.

De-icer picks are designed to remove frost without damaging the glass windscreen and can be picked up for just a couple of pounds.

Homemade de-icer sprays

Homemade sprays can be just as effective as the real thing and provides a simple method of removing frost cover.

Supermarket chain Tesco revealed a simple solution could be made by mixing three parts distilled vinegar with one part water.

Tesco says mixing the solution and spraying over a car would clear the majority of ice on the windscreen in up to five minutes.

Motoring experts at LeaseCar say an easy homemade solution can also be created by mixing one part water with two parts rubbing alcohol or surgical spirit.

  • These common mistakes can invalidate your car insurance

Simply filling a bag full of lukewarm water and running this across a frosted glass surface can clear the cover in seconds.

Filling the bag up with warm water will also provide motorists with an effective hand warmer when clearing their ice cover in another win for road users.

Windscreen protectors

For those in a major rush who do not have time to clear their car windscreens effectively, ordering a windscreen protector may be the best solution.

The large protectors sit across the car windscreen and prevent any major frost build-up throughout the evening.

The next morning, the cover can be simply removed leaving your windscreen clear and free from any ice cover.

However, frost protector can be expensive and cash-strapped motorists may wish to try placing a tea towel over their windscreen instead.

This method will not be as effective but will take the sting out of the frost cover and allow a faster clearing the next day.

Use your engine

Most modern cars are fitted with a heater or demister system which will remove frost cover after running for a couple of minutes.

However, motorists are warned to never leave their vehicle unattended or go back inside their house while their car defrosts on their driveway.

Criminals target vehicles left unattended during winter months and any damage or theft is unlikely to be covered by car insurance firms.

Insurers will see this as your fault and many will feature a clause where a policy becomes invalidated in claims where the key has been left in the ignition.
