Ben Nelmes, spokesperson for electric car experts New AutoMotive said world leaders should be “matching” the UK’s green commitments. Most importantly, nations should be setting a “clear date” when they aim to phase out all polluting vehicles.

He said plans also needed to be put into place on charging infrastructure and introducing economic benefits to entice drivers.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “Obviously we want to see countries making strong, bold commitments around electric cars.

“What that means is we want to see them matching what the UK has said it’s going to do.

“The first thing is to set a clear date when you are going to phase out the sales of petrol and diesel cars.

“The next thing is come up with a plan for how you’re going to make that happen.

“In the UK, the Government has said it is going to introduce this Californian style ZEV mandate which should help make EV’s cheaper for people and help them to get then,

“Come up with a plan for charging, you make sure you get the charging infrastructure in place.

“And lastly you make sure you’re supporting drivers who want to find out more about electric cars.

“There needs to be public information, maybe more fiscal incentives for drivers who need a bit more support to make the switch.

“That first one, setting a clear date on when you will end the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles is the big part.”

So far just a handful of countries have any firm proposals for stopping the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles by the end of the decade.

The UK is joined by nations including Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Iceland, India, Israel, Singapore and Sweden.
