Experts at Marmalade Insurance warn bad weather can “pose many problems” for drivers including the risk of covering a number plate. They warn dirt and water which splashes onto a plate must be cleaned immediately or drivers will risk penalties.

They said: “Rain, snow and storms all lead to wet and dirty roads which can pose many problems for new drivers, especially if correct precautions haven’t been taken.

“Dirty road water can splash onto your car and if you aren’t keeping it clean, potentially cover your number plate.

“Whatever it is that splashes up your car while driving, if it builds up and covers your number plate you could face a £1,000 fine for having an illegally displayed plate.”

Experts at Nationwide Vehicle Contracts has previously warned drivers of the possible dangers.

They have urged road users to always check their plate was clean enough before heading off to avoid being caught out.

A spokesperson said: “This is one that needs particular attention during the winter months.

“You can’t be blamed for the dirty roads or weather conditions, but if you fail to check that your licence plate is legible you could be in trouble.”

They added: “With muddier roads due to snowy and wet weather, it may be worth taking a couple of minutes to check it is clean enough to read clearly.”
