With the sun predicted to set an hour earlier at just after 4:30pm on Sunday, drivers need to get into the routine to turn on their headlights before setting off on trips. However, motorists who do not follow the driving law could be charged with driving without due care and attention.

Experts warn this could land drivers a fixed £100 penalty but this could be increased under some circumstances.

Bud Johnson, Group Marketing Manager at Rivervale Leasing said it can be “easy to forget” to switch your headlights on.

He said drivers must check to make sure their lights are “working properly” as any failures could also see drivers punished.

He has urged drivers to change their habits to always turn on their headlights earlier than usual to avoid being caught out.

He said: “It can be easy to forget to switch your headlights on, especially when you are in a rush!

“Thankfully most modern cars have the auto setting for headlights, so some drivers won’t have to worry about driving unsafely during dark evenings.

“But whenever it is dark outside, you must remember to always check your headlights are switched on and working properly.

“A great way to get in the habit of using your headlights is to switch your lights on half an hour before the sun sets.

“If you can’t see further than 100 metres or you feel your view is obscured in any way, use dim headlights.”

For further nighttime protection, Rivervale Leasing has also urged drivers to avoid looking directly into the light of other vehicles.

They have urged drivers to also be extra aware of their surroundings and increase space between themselves and other vehicles

Speed should be dramatically reduced to allow a three-second gap between yourself and the car in front.
