Motorists across the country have been dealing with frost on their windscreens for weeks now with the winter weather making itself known. But drivers are being warned of potential car theft when going out to prepare their vehicle for a journey.

Oftentimes, drivers will leave their car running for a few moments to defrost while they nip indoors.

This may also be done to keep the engine from seizing up if the car hasn’t been used in a while.

This is when opportunist thieves could jump in and drive off, a technique that has been dubbed “frost-jacking”.

Keith Hawes, Director of Nationwide Vehicle Contracts, warned drivers to be cautious when clearing frost from their car.

He said: “With everything going on right now motorists may not have the security of their cars at the forefront of their mind.

“Even though many of us will be working from home, and a high number of households might be isolating, it doesn’t mean car thieves will also be staying at home too.

“People are finding things tough right now, and the last thing anybody needs on top of other stresses of their car being stolen.

“While it’s impossible to eradicate vehicle theft, you can make it as hard as possible for thieves to break in.

“By taking some extra simple precautions, you can reduce the likelihood of incidents happening to your vehicle.”

Theft in this way is also likely to invalidate your car insurance policy as insurers will consider this an at-fault claim.

Since the car was left open, the drivers can be found to have been negligent in protecting their vehicle.

This could likely lead to invalidation or the insurance premiums going through the roof.
